Affordable Teacher Housing

The Dare Education Foundation, in partnership with Dare County Schools and the State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation, opened our newest affordable teacher housing complex in July 2011. Run Hill Ridge

Run Hill Ridge is a 24 unit apartment complex located adjacent to the First Flight Schools campus in Kill Devil Hills.  A $2.25 million interest-free loan from the State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation (SECUF) was the first step toward construction of the complex.  Rented below market value at $750 per month, the apartments are an affordable option for teachers who may not otherwise be able to afford to live here.

Run Hill Ridge is much more than home to 24 Dare County Schools’ teachers.  Run Hill Ridge is a proven recruitment and retention tool, enabling Dare County Schools to hire and keep highly qualified teachers in our classrooms.  Nineteen new teacher recruits have been tenants of Run Hill Ridge over the past two years.  For the 2009-2010, 33% of new teachers hired lived at Run Hill Ridge.  Two of these new teachers were graduates of Dare County Schools.  Further, the apartments have helped Dare County Schools build a foreign language program, particularly the elementary Spanish and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs.  Run Hill Ridge has also helped hire other “hard to fill” positions like exceptional children, technology, and advanced level math.
